We start at Broughton Grange, outside Broughton Village, which is a large estate set in a magnificent landscape. The garden has many interesting rooms and aspects and includes Tom Stuart-Smith’s celebrated masterpiece – the walled parterre garden with its waves of box which should be overflowing with tulips at the time of our visit.
The next stop is to nearby Broughton Castle, the fortified and moated medieval manor house which has been home to the Fiennes family since 1554. Lunch here will be followed by a tour of the house and a wander in the small but exquisite Ladies’ Garden which is laid out in a pattern of boxwood hearts.
Finally, there is tea at Pettifers, Lower Wardington, an admired and closely-followed plantsman’s garden which also has topiary, a wildflower meadow and magnificent countryside views.
